Relationship Coaching

What is it, and how is it different
from marriage counseling?

Relationship coaching is a collaborative process, carried out between you, your coach, and (if appropriate) others involved in the relationship you desire to improve.

Relationship coaching may be used as a tool to improve a variety of relationships. These include relationships with:

- A spouse or intimate partner.
- A family member – child, parent, sibling, in-law, etc.
- A friend, coworker, neighbor, community member, etc.

Sometimes you might seek relationship counseling together with another person, such as a spouse or a child. At other times, you may wish to seek a coach’s help to improve your relationship skills to help with dating, friendship building, communication, parenting, difficult family relationships, divorce transition, or other areas.

Unlike marriage therapy, which often focuses on past problems and hurts, relationship coaching serves to equip you with powerful skills to create better relationships now and in the future, through improved communication, connection, and interaction with others.

Relationship Coaching
generally consists
of 3 fundamental stages:

Step 1: Assessment

Step 2: Planning

Step 3: Implementation

In Step 1, you and your coach identify your desired relationship vision, and clarify unmet needs, expectations, obstacles and issues in your current relationship. You then develop a vision for your improved connection.

In Step 2, you and your coach map out a clear plan of action, to guide you in your daily progression toward achieving your goals. You emerge with a practical set of actions to carry out day by day.

In Step 3, you put into motion the plan created in Step 2. Your coach assigns you homework to carry out between sessions, moving you step by step toward the completion of your desired objectives.

Through these 3 steps, your life coach serves as a guide, mentor, and cheerleader, providing support, motivation, and accountability. Your coach can help keep you focused in taking powerful steps toward the desired transformation of your relationship – whether that be a marriage, dating relationship, family connection, or other. Your coach will help you learn to create happier, more fulfilling relationships, through consistent positive actions, carried out over time.
